A Choshu samurai and the restless creator of the Kiheitai militia. He studied under Yoshida Shoin and helped push Choshu toward the anti-shogunate movement, but died of tuberculosis before the Meiji Restoration was achieved.

Translation

At Shimonoseki, the sea stretches into cloud; evening smoke closes over the question of where the fallen emperor’s spirit remains.

Reading

This poem shows not only Takasugi's bright rebellion, but the memory of older wars sinking into the strait. It treats Shimonoseki itself as a poetic field. Read together with Shinsaku Takasugi, the poem is not only a matter of literal meaning; it shows movement and solitude at the edge of an age.
